Jones’ daughter, Karen Westaway, expressed her gratitude to the staff at St James’s for their compassionate care of her father in his final days.

She said, “Today, Leeds says goodbye to a rugby legend, while we say goodbye to a wonderful dad – an inspiring mentor and coach whose warmth and kindness will never be forgotten.”

Jones’ journey in rugby began in Swansea, playing club rugby union for Neath and Llanelli.

He made his Wales debut against England in 1950 and helped Wales to a Grand Slam that year.

The late rugby legend’s performance earned him a spot on the Lions’ tour of New Zealand and Australia, where he scored 26 points in three Tests.

He won another six Wales caps and another Grand Slam in 1952 before making the switch to the league with Leeds.
